Bender Visual-Motor Gestalt Test, Second Edition

Clinical | Educational | Abilities | Academic Functioning

The Bender-Gestalt II is clinician-administered and asks clients to reproduce Gestalt figures presented on stimulus cards. This test uses recall procedures to assess visual-motor memory and provide a more comprehensive assessment of visual-motor skills. The Bender-Gestalt II includes supplemental tests of simple motor and perceptual ability helps identify specific visual-motor deficits. This test can also be used to assess neurological damage and emotional disorders. The test consists of 14 figures, each on its own card. The client is shown each figure and asked to copy it onto a piece of blank paper. The results are scored based on accuracy and other observations such as physical demeanor, drawing technique, test-taking behavior, and attitude.

The Bender-Gestalt II consists of 2 scales:

  • Visual-Motor Skills
  • Visual-Motor Memory

The Bender-Gestalt II test can be used by psychologists in a variety of settings, including:

  • as part of a neuropsychological test battery.
  • in mental health settings to help diagnose and plan treatment for patients.
  • in schools and child development clinics to help identify and assess brain dysfunction that may be a cause of learning disabilities.

Although South African research and norms are not yet available for the Bender-Gestalt II, JVR Psychometrics welcomes the opportunity to partner with clients in conducting research studies in their organisations.
