Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS)

Assess depression, suicide intent and ideation

By asking clients to either endorse pessimistic statements or deny optimistic statements, the Beck Hopelessness Scale® supports early identification and diagnosis of depression, suicidal intent and suicide ideation, by measuring key aspects of hopelessness: feelings about the future, loss of motivation, and expectations.

The BHS measures three major aspects of hopelessness:
Feelings about the future
Loss of motivation
Future expectations


AREAS OF APPLICATION

The BHS is useful in any setting where it is necessary to assess client’s degree of depression, suicide ideation or suicide intent.


REPORT OPTIONS

  • Interpretive Report: provides the assessment results, interpretation of results and items endorsed by the client from a single administration.

  • Progress Report: provides an overview of change over time by combining candidate results from multiple administrations as well as clinical outcomes.

 

SOUTH AFRICAN RESEARCH

Although South African research and norms are not yet available for the BHS, JVR Psychometrics welcomes the opportunity to partner with clients in conducting research studies.
