Hogan General Employability

JvR Psychometrics is excited to announce that Hogan has launched a new report, the Hogan General Employability, and since we are proud distributors of their suite of assessments, we will now also be offering our clients access to this new tool. So why are we distributing the Hogan General Employability report?

Globally, companies are accepting that their success is largely reliant on the employees within the organisation and the efforts they expend to make the organisation a productive, profitable and reputable one. Research has indicated that businesses that make better hiring decisions have less turnover since their employees are engaged and satisfied within the organisation, while businesses that make poor hiring decisions suffer low productivity, high turnover, alienated employees, and, ultimately, failure according to a study done by David Jones in 2011. Recruitment processes are also becoming costly – not only from time spent reviewing CV’s, to interviews and training the new employee but also from the productive time lost when an old employee resigns or under-performs, having a negative impact on the realisation of company objectives. The Hogan General Employability is a quick, although very cost-effective, solution in the form of a screening tool that identifies the suitability of employees for entry-level roles, thereby assisting people professionals to make those better hiring decisions.

There are already many assessments in the market that predict employee performance. What makes the Hogan General Employability unique?

Agreeably, there are many selection instruments in the market that can measure individuals’ competency levels for specific positions or assist practitioners in inferring whether the candidates have the personality for the job. But what has always made the Hogan assessments unique is that they measure these personality traits from a self-presentation, or reputation perspective – that is, how others would perceive this individual, rather than what individuals think their identity is. What makes the Hogan General Employability even more special is that, unlike other reports in the Hogan range, it can be accessed without accreditation training on the Hogan Assessment Series. The Hogan General Employability uses a shortened version of the Hogan Personality Inventory (popularly known as the HPI), a thoroughly researched and reputable assessment grounded in socioanalytic theory and the well-known Five Factor Model to measure individuals’ reputations, which has important consequences for their social acceptance and career success and was designed specifically to assess workplace personality. The Hogan General Employability solution considers people skills, learning skills, and work ethic to provide people professionals and managers with an overview of how potential employees would be perceived across these domains. And this is another unique offering – most of the other Hogan reports, like the Hogan Personality Inventory, Hogan Development Survey and the Motives, Values and Preferences Inventory, assist decision-makers with ‘screening-in’ of candidates within more higher-level roles – when wanting to retain only the top candidates using an integrated approach to determine which candidates will be offered the position. However, the Hogan General Employability is more suitable as a screening-out tool, particularly in high-volume selection cases – to identify those who clearly will not fit the role, especially in lower-stakes jobs.

Tell us about what the report output looks like, and who will benefit from the results?

This assessment provides one with an easily interpretable single page report, which indicates candidates’ overall score on the assessment, and scores on each of the three scales- namely people skills, learning skills, and work ethic. People skills relate to the ability to get along with others and effectively engage in teamwork and display interpersonal competence. Learning skills concern the ability of the candidate to learn new skills and the functions of the job on-the-go, as the job or the role changes, as they progress in the organisation – something that is becoming more prevalent today as roles are becoming less static. The last scale, work ethic has always been valued in the workplace and refers to the ability to take instructions, work hard and produce high-quality results in an efficient manner. Such an overview can assist people professionals in selecting the best-fit, highest performers for entry-level roles. Furthermore, with growing concerns over unemployment rates, individuals also need to know their employability – their ability to find and retain a job. Providing them with feedback on such an assessment would also be beneficial.
